Prior to the start of the final keynote address on Wednesday afternoon, we watched a video of comments by NECC 2008 attendees. One of the men interviewed made the statement: "You've got to jump in. You can't wait till the water's warm enough to walk in." This really struck a chord with me. All too often, some of our teachers are reluctant to "jump in". What a shame to miss out on wonderful opportunities for our students and for ourselves because of our hesitation. We, as technology advocates, should continually strive to "jump in" and model that behavior and attitude to those with whom we work.

I went to another session on reserach of 1:1 laptop programs. The presenters shared findings of their reserach studies. Nothing that we had not already researched in our own district, but reinforced our own findings of change in teacher practice, home use, and better writing.

It's not about the laptops, it is about what you do with them that counts. A quote from Seymour Papert, "Technology opens new possibilities for things to happen."

Angie,

I saw their presentation during the Leadership Symposium and was very impressed too. I would like to bring Jim and/or Marli to the district to talk with our STAR Grant team. I think they had some very good projects that would fit well into our math and science grant.

After visiting the exhibit hall, we found out that ASUS will have some newer models of their ultramobile PC out very soon. The newer ones have a larger screen and a battery that lasts 7.5 hours. I think this will solve some of the issues we had been discussing earlier.

Lauri,
There will be a Sketchpad session in our August staff development on the 13th-15th. Also - there are fantastic tutorials in Sketchup. I would recommend downloading it on your computer, and then work through some of them. They are a lot of fun, and you get to build things while getting comfortable with the software. Try it! You'll love it, I think.

I attended a session on Wednesday which was entitled: Using Authentic Problems to Scafold Decision Making Skills . This session creates opportunities for students to practice decision making skills in core subject areas. I feel that the students would really benefit from these problems since real world problems are used. Exciting and innovative these critical thinking skills are what we are encouraging our students to deveolp and will give the Teacher an avenue to help the students achieve that goal. (NETS: 5:3)
Also, Thanks for the opportunity to attend this conference.
Sincerely,
Autum Scott

On Tuesday I attended different sessions but found two that I really believed to be most helpful. The first was Building Math Skills Through Digital Games . This appealed to me because at Bowie we are always looking for interactive, engaging activities that will help students learn. The game that was demonstrated will be available in January 2009 and is called Lure of Labyrinth. It serves different student levels in a game atmosphere and will be free to the user. Check it out in January 2009. ( NETS: A: I,II)
Next, I found the session: Finding Grants and Funding fro Distance Education to be very interesting. I have never written a grant and fell much more comfortable to attack that process after attending the seminar. Different websites were given, definitions, and different types of proposals. It was defintely a session for the novice grant writer. (NETS: A; IV)
