Digital Citizenship
This standard promotes a realization of the diverse issues associated with technology and the global community. Lawful and ethical use of information is emphasized in this objective along with safety, awareness, and responsibility. Students are encouraged to collaborate in order to promote learning and efficiency. By incorporating these ideas into their daily routine, students will exhibit leadership for digital citizenship.
This video from YouTube was shown at one of the sessions I attended on Saturday. Although there are some conflicting viewpoints about the fair use of copyrighted material within this video, the purpose of the video is certainly to inform the audience about copyright infringement. If you are not familiar with “A Fair(y) Use Tale”, you might want to take a look…..
I really appreciated the presentation by Anastasia Goodstein (her blog is called YPulse http://www.ypulse.com) during the Internet safety town hall panel. She focused on the positive aspects of social networking and how it can fulfill core social developmental needs for teenagers. She also stressed the importance of teaching today’s teens about ethics and information literacy. She said she would rather see schools spend more time on teaching about appropriate use of online resources rather than trying to scare them about predators, etc. She also talked about teaching marketing literacy and helping students recognized branded entertainment or branded information. I especially liked her idea about encouraging “active reputation management” – helping students learn to build a positive digital representation of themselves online.
In the keynote this morning Lester Holt had the Privilege of interviewing Marli Bickley and Jim Carleton, two dynamic teachers from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. These teachers have gone from technology challenged to technology pioneers that are giving their students global opportunities. Using collaboration these teachers and their students are helping to make the world a better place. So now I am thining – what’s going to inspire me?
Angie,
I saw their presentation during the Leadership Symposium and was very impressed too. I would like to bring Jim and/or Marli to the district to talk with our STAR Grant team. I think they had some very good projects that would fit well into our math and science grant.
